    while watching one of Simon Whistler’s Visual Politik videos on YouTube he suggested viewers should visit your website & either visit a blog or webcast. clicked on the link below his video, directed to your webpage. clicked on your Podcast link to view ‘Tribal Flippage on Trade and Immigration’ and spent the next 3 minutes listening to an advert! will NOT visit again as i hate adverts as they interrupt my viewing pleasure!       Hi there – Xander here. Thanks for commenting. We hear you and understand your concern. Housekeeping is a necessary evil of independent podcasts. Neither Erik nor I make any real money doing this – whatever we earn through Patreon is put back in as marketing dollars. Unlike Simon – who I’ve met, and who I love – Reconsider is a side project for us both, not our primary occupation or how we earn a living. Erik and I both have full time jobs and personal lives, and on top of that we sink a ton of hours into the research needed for every episode because we think the Reconsider approach/perspective is important, and not something that can be found elsewhere.

      The tradeoff for providing extremely detailed research that takes a long time to do are those 3 minutes of housekeeping in the beginning. It’s just part of the overhead cost. We do hope you’ll give the show another chance, and by all means, feel free to forward past the first few minutes if they are really bothering you. But also please recognize that you’re receiving the output of an incredible amount of work for free, and that in the grand scheme of things a minor interruption to your viewing pleasure is a much smaller price to pay than, say, actually paying something for this content.

    I get what you’re saying here, and I agree with the majority of your early examples, but I would say that your analysis of the situation in Syria was flawed. There was no effort to permanently occupy Syria with US forces; America’s strategic goal was the recognition of a democratic federalist enclave in Rojava, partially independent of Assad’s central gov’t à la the Kurdistan Regional Government in Iraq. While Iran is in Syria and will be for the foreseeable future, this withdrawal is a direct surrender and a major propaganda victory for Iran and Russia. Furthermore, the decision- making process behind the Syria withdrawal could NEVER be compared to the withdrawal from Iraq. Literally being on the phone with an adversarial world leader and caving to their first demand is nothing like a 3- year withdrawal plan. I didn’t support either, but this is a crucial separation. I agree with your core thesis here, I get that tribal politics are wonky. But please, do more homework next time.

    Furthermore, there’s a lot of daylight between wanting to bomb Iran to the stone age and wanting to surrender easy geopolitical victories to them. I wouldn’t say this is "flippage", I would call it a national strategy.
